A creature that lives about 150 million years ago and has the size of a crow. It has a mix of birds and reptiles. It has moving feathers and wings, as well as teeth and tails. Recent research has shown that it is likely to glide or jump around like a pheasant. Birds like the bird dragon are considered to be only gliding.

New research shows that gliding does not have to be an intermediate step in flapping wings for active flight. The researchers focused on the tail feather bird, a larger, peacock-sized animal known as the first non-flying dinosaur with a pair of feather "primitive wings."

Although the tail feather bird does not fly, it may flap its wings while running, which in turn may be the ultimate evolution that triggers active flight. To test this hypothesis, the researchers analyzed the mechanical effects of running on different parts of the animal's body. According to calculations, if the tail feathers fly at a speed of 2.5 to 5.8 meters per second, forced vibrations from the legs can cause the flapping of the original wings. This is quite easy for a creature with an estimated maximum speed of 8 meters per second.

To test in the real world, the team then created a life-size tail-bird robot that can run at different speeds on a treadmill. The results show that the running action can flap the wings. In another study, the researchers installed artificial wings on the ostrich.

Jing-Shan Zhao, the lead author of the study, pointed out: "Our research shows that when a dinosaur runs on the ground, the action of fanning the feathers is passive and natural. Although the action of flapping the wings does not lift the dinosaur into the air, The action of moving the wings may develop earlier than the action of gliding."
