Largest Dinosaur Skeleton On Display At London's Natural History Museum For The First Time

Apr. 10, 2023

At 8 metres tall and 37 metres long, Megalosaurus was one of the largest creatures on Earth.

Visitors will now be able to walk under the skeleton of the giant dinosaur at the Natural History Museum in London.

With the opening of the new exhibition on 31 March, this will mark the first time the skeleton of this huge dinosaur has been exhibited in Europe.

The Titanosaurus weighed four times as much as Dippy the beamosaur, which itself weighed around 15 tonnes and weighed as much as nine African elephants, making it the most complete skeleton of a giant dinosaur ever found.

Museum officials say it is so large that it barely fits inside the nine-metre high Waterhouse Gallery and the sheer size of the beast would dwarf anyone who came to visit.

Fact file:

The dinosaur skeleton weighs 2.67 tonnes, the equivalent of five concert grand pianos or approximately 46,842 hot cross buns.

It is thought to have weighed much more when alive, with experts claiming it could have weighed as much as 57 tonnes.

From nose to tail, the living animal is about 37 metres long. The same length as nine London fire engines.

It is also thought to have been about eight metres tall.

Most adult femurs are about 46 centimetres long. The femur of the Titanosaurus was 2.38 metres long.

It is thought that this huge dinosaur ate over 129 kg of plants per day. This is the equivalent of 516 round lettuces.

Even if they eventually grew very large, their eggs were only the size of a grapefruit.

Patagotitan mayorum is an incredible specimen that tells us more about the giant titanosaur than ever before," said Professor Paul Barrett, scientific director of the exhibition.

"This stellar specimen, which weighs as much as more than nine African elephants, will inspire visitors to look after some of the largest and most vulnerable creatures on the planet, which face similar survival challenges, and show that size does matter in the Earth's ecosystems."

Dr Alex Birch, Director of Public Programmes at the Museum, added: "We are very excited that Patagotitan, the most complete giant dinosaur ever discovered, will be making its European debut at the Natural History Museum, the home of dinosaurs.

"Our fascination with dinosaurs provides an ideal opportunity to inspire and inform the next generation about the natural world and to empower them to take action for the planet."

Those wishing to catch a glimpse of the giant dinosaur can visit the Natural History Museum between 31 March and January 2024.
