What Does the Realistic Dinosaur Animation Bring to People? Pterosaurs and Birds in the Modern World

Would There Have Been Dinosaurs If Not for That Meteor?

Nov. 23, 2021

A 6-mile-wide asteroid dealt a fatal blow to the dinosaurs, who were already struggling with a host of environmental threats. But what if the asteroid had missed Earth?

New research suggests that the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs was not only due to the 6-mile-wide asteroid that struck Earth about 66 million years ago, but also to a number of other environmental threats. Between violent volcanic activity, dramatic sea level changes and temperature fluctuations, the dinosaur world of the late Cretaceous was far from idyllic. But could Earth's instability affect dinosaurs entirely on its own? Probably not. Animated dinosaur manufacturer GENGU shares with you this novel imagination.

About 400,000 years before the asteroid hit Earth, massive volcanic eruptions began in India, causing rapid changes in global climate. That, combined with dramatic ecosystem changes, may have weakened non-avian dinosaurs. But researchers in a study published this week in Biological Review say it was giant space rocks that dealt the fatal blow.

Dinosaurs have been around for 150 million years. Their diversity has been in flux. There's been a lot of decline in their diversity over time, but they always recover, and if they had more time, I'm sure they would have recovered.

The catastrophe that happened

The asteroid struck the Yucatan Peninsula at about 45,000 miles per hour with enough force to launch 100 million atomic bombs. After the impact, the Earth's surface was nearly barren. Dust covered most of the area around the impact site. Within a few hours, an earthquake on the Richter scale and a 650-foot tsunami devastated the Caribbean.

The evaporated remains of soil, water and any living creatures near the impact site rushed upward to the edge of space and then fell back to Earth, triggering a heat wave that caused spontaneous burning of trees around the globe.

A cooling period followed, and Ejecta flew through the sky, blocking photosynthesis and killing plants. This effect was exaggerated in the upper atmosphere because the impact site was rich in sulfur. In the lower atmosphere, this ejecta produced acid rain.

Most dinosaurs would have died from the heat. But the animals that survived that fateful day struggled for the next few weeks and years. About 70 percent of all life went extinct.

If the asteroid had never hit?

It would have been a different world, and without that impact, [the dinosaurs] might have moved on.

The story of the dinosaurs is our story, and their extinction left a gap that needs to be filled. Although some mammals went extinct in the great extinction, enough survived that the Earth entered the age of mammals.

If the dinosaurs had not gone extinct, mammals might have remained in the shadows as they did more than 100 million years ago. Then, humans might never have been here.

What does that mean?

Dinosaurs may have been weakened by climate change. Although the Earth today is not as violently volcanic as it was in the time of the dinosaurs, the climate is changing and sea levels are rising.

If an asteroid were to hit today, we would be in huge trouble. Having to live with that is not a good thing. Especially because our world is losing a lot of its diversity today. It's time to think about putting the responsibility of protecting the planet on everyone's shoulders.
